Next Steps
Key verse
But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid." And Peter answered Him and said, "Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water." So He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. Matthew 14:27-29
Often, God gives us a fresh start in our circumstances. Then we do nothing, and it leads nowhere. For instance, we have eternal life the moment we enter a relationship with Jesus Christ. But to live a full and abundant life that Jesus came to give—besides the eternal life we receive—we obtain it through a series of steps that make up the journey of life. There is a next step for everyone reading this devotion today, no matter where you are on the journey of life.
Imagine walking on water like Peter. You can experience joy and fulfillment in this life that makes it feel you are walking on water. All you need is to exercise the faith the Lord gave you and take a step.
Our lives terrify us at times—whether it is receiving bad news from the doctor, uncertainty about our job, difficulty in our relationships, or hardships in our finances. We don’t always know how we will make it. The disciples found themselves in that same situation, and Jesus said, “Take courage.” Taking the next step requires courage.
Jesus said, “Take courage.”
Maybe you are in one of those storms of life right now. You need courage. Not courage in yourself but the courage found in knowing who God is. It is far riskier to depend on ourselves than on the Lord.
Perhaps your step of faith comprises giving up sin in your life. Maybe it is taking a step of service in ministry or at the church. It could possibly consist of tithing, forgiving someone, or receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Think upon these things and take your next step!
Prayer
God, show me my next step and give me the courage to take it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Ask Yourself:
What is my next step in life? At church? With my education? In my relationships?
