The Bible is full of insight into parenting. Psalm 127:3-5 says that children are “like arrows in the hand of a warrior.” Proverbs 22:6 encourages us to “train a child how they should live and when they are older, they will not depart from it.” I am blessed to think about my children taking God’s ministry further than I ever could. But I don’t want to put that on them as a burden, rather, a foundation that they can build upon to stand on my shoulders in order to go much further in life. I pray my life is an example to them of service, worship, and love for Jesus!

I know it's dangerous to be too close of friends with your kids and not the assertive parent they need. But I, too, believe that God can give us the grace and wisdom to balance that. I love being a friend to my children and enjoying life with them. Spending time with my wife and kids is extremely rewarding to my life. I want them to know their dad not only loves them but also likes them and desires to spend time with them. I pray they feel the same way about their kids one day. 

There is considerable evidence in modern psychology that a child becomes a better spouse, citizen, and follower of God if their parent affirmed, loved, and cared for them when they were young. It is one of the greatest honors to raise a child up to love the Lord and follow Him.

My prayer for you today is that your family will become one of the most satisfying things in your life. Remember, we can’t take possessions with us to heaven. The only thing we can take with us is people. Having a strong connection and bond with your children can have an eternal impact. One of the greatest witnesses that you’ll have on earth is a strong, loving family.

Dear heavenly Father, help me enjoy my family. I know my spouse and children can challenge me, but they are so rewarding. Help me realize that my children belong to You and that I am only stewarding them for a season. Help me enjoy life to the fullest and crave wisdom from heaven to maximize the time I have with these precious gifts from You! Amen.
