Should I Eat That?

Key verse

Now he who provides seed to the sower and bread for food will also provide and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 2 CORNITHIANS 9:10

Jehovah-Jireh is a name for God that means “the Lord my provider.” When we talk to or about God, we need to know who He is. But just knowing that God is our provider isn’t enough. We must also learn what it is He is providing or making available to us. This happens naturally when we read our Bibles and have a relationship with Him.

In this particular scripture, we find the Apostle Paul talking about God as a financial provider. Paul uses an analogy about farming where he tells us that God provides:

      1. Seed for sowing (planting)

      2. Bread for eating

      3. Increase of harvest that produces more seed

We all know a seed does nothing if we don’t put it in the ground. Our money works the same way. If we are holding onto everything God is providing and won’t let it go, we aren’t trusting God to provide the harvest. He gives us enough to be generous and enough to save for our future.

He gives us enough to be generous and enough to save for our future.

On the other hand, not everything that comes into our hands is for giving away. God also provides us with bread for eating. This is a picture of enjoying what we have now. God does not want His people living in lack or in fear of not having enough. If we find ourselves struggling with generosity, the fear we’ll never have enough, or enjoying what we have today, we need to ask ourselves the question: “Is what I’ve been given seed for sowing or bread for eating?”

Whether you’re consuming everything, giving it all away, or hoarding, your view of God as the provider may be distorted. When you recognize that He is the one who provides the seed, the bread, and the harvest, you will never have to live in fear of not having enough. God is looking to partner with us, and His mercies are new every day. No matter how well or poorly you’ve handled what God has provided in the past, He’s eager to partner with you to see increase today.

Prayer

God, thank You for being the provider in every aspect of my life. Help me manage the resources You’ve given me and give me wisdom to know what is seed for sowing and bread for eating. I know that when I give and save, You will bless my finances and increase my harvest. I know it because Your word says so.

Ask Yourself:

1. Do I view God or myself as the provider?

2. Is there an area of “good soil” God is showing me to “plant seed”?

3. Is what I’ve been given seed for sowing or bread for eating?
